Accessibility statement
What we have done to make this website usable by everyone, what we know is imperfect, and how to tell us when we get it wrong.
Our commitment
An institution whose purpose is widening access cannot publish a website that narrows it. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.1 at level AA, and we treat that as a floor rather than a finish line.
What we have done
- Every colour pair carrying text was measured rather than assumed. The lowest contrast on the site is 4.74:1, above the 4.5:1 the guidelines require. The brand gold is used for rules, borders and numerals but never for text, because at 2.1:1 on white it would be unreadable.
- The site works from the keyboard alone, with a visible focus outline on every link, button and field, and a skip link to jump past the navigation.
- Headings run in order on every page without skipping a level, so screen reader users can navigate by structure.
- Every form field has a label attached to it. Errors are announced, tied to the field they belong to, and written in plain language.
- The registration form announces each step change, and the review step lets you check everything before submitting.
- Interactive targets are at least 44 by 44 pixels.
- Every image has alternative text, and decorative images are hidden from screen readers rather than described.
- The layout works from 320 pixels upward, reflows without horizontal scrolling, and respects browser text sizing.
- If you have asked your system to reduce motion, all animation, delay and smooth scrolling are switched off and content appears immediately.
- The page does not depend on scripting to be readable. If JavaScript fails, nothing is hidden.
Known limitations
We would rather name these than let you discover them.
- Typefaces load from Google Fonts. On a slow or blocked connection the site falls back to a system serif and sans serif, which changes the look but not the legibility.
- The registration form has not yet been tested end to end with every combination of screen reader and browser. We have tested the structure and the announcements, not every pairing.
- Photography on the site is being replaced as new material arrives, and alternative text for new images is reviewed as each one is added.
- We have not yet had an independent accessibility audit. We intend to commission one as the organisation grows.
Tell us when we get it wrong
If something on this website blocked you, we want to hear about it, and we will treat it as a defect rather than a suggestion. Write to info@hernextnetwork.org with the page, what you were trying to do, and the browser or assistive technology you were using. We aim to reply within ten working days.
If you need any information from this site in another format, ask us and we will provide it.
